The town of Setit-Humera and its surrounding areas have been designated as a regional growth corridor and a center for industrial development. Given its significance as the primary economic hub and transportation gateway between Eritrea and Sudan, as well as its other roles within the study region, its importance will continue throughout the planning period. It is crucial to establish strong urban-urban linkages between all the urban centers in the study region to ensure the provision of essential higher-order goods and services for the small towns and the majority of rural residents in the area.
Out of the 17 urban centers with official urban status, 10 (58.82%) are located in Q’afta Humera Wereda, while the remaining 7 (41.17%) are situated in Tsegede and Wolqait Weredas. These urban centers have primarily developed along the major road corridors, taking into account their geographical distribution.
Our company has developed a comprehensive structure plan that will guide the urban growth of Humera Town during the planning period of 2017-2027. This legally binding urban planning document outlines the key elements of land use and transportation routes within the town. It identifies areas and locations for major urban functions and reserved areas, taking into account the anticipated needs of the town’s population.
The structure plan envisions Humera Town becoming the agro-industry center of the region and proposes various land uses that support this role. It capitalizes on the opportunities and potential identified in the analysis phase and addresses planning issues identified in sectoral studies. Additionally, the plan aims to develop the Tekeze River front, revitalizing the older settlement and creating a recreational space for residents and tourists.
The existing situation analysis highlights significant achievements, particularly in attracting investments to the town. The plan recognizes the importance of sustaining this motivation and investment attraction to fulfill the goal of establishing Humera as an industrial center. The proposed plan introduces new active nodes and corridors, in addition to leveraging the existing ones, to play a significant role in shaping the town’s structure and facilitating its development.
Study Area: The plan covers a total area of 3,800 hectares.
Population: As of 2017, the population of Humera Town was 36,000, and it is projected to reach 57,140 by 2027.
